Hi, regarding orchid photos, "freely available" is not the same thing as "public domain". "CopyrightedFreeUse" is more appropriate. Stan Shebs 12:39, 28 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This photo of the Grove Street Lodge house at Derby Arboretum was taken by me during July 2005. I have a print of the original on my luving room wall, and several other views were raken at the same time. I live within five minutes walk from this site and I do take objection to someone claiming rights to the photograph.

Copyright Info[edit]

Please make sure you always use the correct copyright tag. Only upload images to the commons if you are sure about their license status, and it conforms to Commons:Licensing. Copying images with unknown license and labeling them as PD is not a good idea and meight even get you blocked. -- Duesentrieb 12:59, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Orchid pictures[edit]

Next time you upload pictures could you please create an article with the name of the orchid and place the picture in it instead of placing the picture in the Category:Orchidaceae. "Moving" files to the commons[edit]

Do NOT move files from local wikipedias to the commons if you don't know who to do this. At Image:Berggartenbibliothek.jpg you simply put a link to the source in the description field. This is illegal. You have to copy the description from the original page and, esepcially, name the author. THe GFDL license tag is useless without the name of an author. Thank you for providing images to the commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page.
If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

rename instead of bad name[edit]

in several cases you had added the "bad name" command, when you obviously wanted to rename the file, for example in File:Fumaria muralis Flower and fruits 7March DehesaBoyalPuertollano.jpg. Hello Javier, using ISO dates (2010-03-29 instead of 2010-March-29) allows localized display of dates, so e.g. I see 2010-03-29 as 29. März 2010 and you see it as 29 de marzo de 2010 (if you've set Spanish as your interface language here). That's neat, isn't it? :-)

Agrostis nebulosa - not?[edit]

Hi Javier, I think your two photos of Agrostis nebulosa are definitely not of that species.

For comparison here are two photos on Commons by another photographer (taken at a flower show in England!) that show what I believe to be the true plant.

Note the much broader leaf (just visible if you look closely) and the very different form of the inflorescence, a very open airy panicle with none of the long, prominent awns and glumes that are visible in your close-up. Here is a link to an image of one of the original specimens preserved at Kew [1] – very different.

Misidentified plant images[edit]

Hi Javier martin, the images above do not look even close to Melittis melissophyllum, but quite similar to Teucrium scorodonia. I have never been to Spain and I do not know the plants there. Hi Javier martin, your image in the gallery above was misidentified as Cirsium palustre. However, the flowers of Cirsium palustre are intensely red, whereas Cirsium arvense has pinkish flowers. The stems of Cirsium palustre are winged and very spiny, whereas those of Cirsium arvense are not. According to the key of "Flora Europaea" your image must show Cirsium arvense. However, I don't know whether any new taxa were separated from Cirsium arvense more recently in your area. Anyway, I changed the ID of this plant to Cirsium arvense.
